Comments: Erm. As you can see, I'm getting epically behind on NaNoWriMo. I won't give excuses. I'll admit it. I'm just not motivated. *Sigh* I had meant to add a couple thousand words to my count this morning, but then the whole computer crash thing happened. I'm still within catch up range though, so I'm really going to try to focus on writing daily and see what I can do to get back on track! How are you doing on your word counts (NaNo or otherwise)? I know some off you are blowing the rest of us out of the water. Totally. Awesome. Keep it up everyone!!!!!
Once upon a time, before I was backing up on a regular basis . . . my computer crashed. Arrrggghhh. I lost some great stuff. Once upon a time, after my computer was back up and running . . . the hard drive failed. Arrrgggh. I lost some great stuff.
ReplyDeleteOnce upon a time, I decided the following back up procedures: hard drive, flash drive, and external hard drive. I do this every time I exit out of any writing document. I also do an online back up once per week to be on the safe side.
Twice burned, and all that jazz. : )

I hear you Scott. I should know better. I've lost huge chunks of writing to this kind of stuff before. I needed this reminder apparently!
ReplyDeleteIt DOES give me a lovely excuse to consider buying a new computer.
Hm....

I'm going great guns, at 19885. I'm hoping to pad that a little in the next couple of days, since I feel a slowdown coming--I'm going to need a few days of thinking about the novel soon.
ReplyDeleteAnd I say that I'm going great guns, but actually todays words were a bit weaker than I wanted. I cringe knowing that they will have to be overhauled sometime soon. Oh, well.
Casey--sorry things are going slowly. There is definitely still lots of time to catch up.
I've managed to crawl my way to 11k in my NaNo book. I knew I was a little behind but I thought I was doing okay until I looked at some of my writing buddy stats and some of them are at 25K! Regardless, I will keep chugging along at my snail pace and I WILL cross that finish line! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThis is why I love my external hard drive that automatically backs up everything. One less worry.
ReplyDeleteMy advice would always be to set up an automatic back up mechanism - so you don't have to remember to do it. It's too easy to forget. I have all my writing automatically backed up to an external drive and to an internet backup service and both just happen in the background.
ReplyDeleteWhew. I'm going to back up. Stat. It's been a while.
ReplyDeletesf
I back mine up every night with a program called iDrive. Totally free, and helps me sleep at night.
ReplyDeleteAnd I, uh, abandoned my NaNo project at 15 K. Is it legal to start something else? Or maybe I'll just stay down while I can.
18k words and then some of hastily crafted crap! I must still be in the honeymoon stage of NaNo, because I'm enjoying this writing marathon. I wonder what I'll think when it's time to hit 30k?
ReplyDeleteonly 4,200 but I think that I found some motivation. My friend's daughter has reached 19,400 and she is 13. She asked me what the hold up was..lol..I didn't have an answer for her...
ReplyDeleteI'm so paranoid about a crash I have backups everywhere. It's getting ridiculous. But this just confirms the need for the paranoia.
ReplyDeleteBuying a new computer? Macs rule. And Scrivener won't run on PCs.
ReplyDeleteNaNo: You're doing great, Casey!
If you're writing daily, that's more important than word count.
If you're happy with what you've written, that's more important than word count.
And if you don't make 50,000 words, the NaNo police will not--I repeat, will not--arrest you for posing as a "real" writer. I promise.
I've finished one chapter and the first scene of another. Probably 3,500 words for the week so far. That's good progress for me.
Remember. Macs. Trust me. I used to run a public school computer lab.
;-)
I'm a little behind, but definitely catch-up-able. My face, however, has aged ten years in the past ten days. I'm not kidding, though I wish I were.
ReplyDeleteBut, my critique/blog partners and I are headed to a retreat tomorrow morning, and I'm hopeful it will do wonders for my word count, my sleep deficiency, and my face.
I went through a similar thing this year. Our computer crashed. It was fixed. It crashed and died. Bought new computer. It crashed. Learned how to transfer files from one computer to another and how to back up on a stick.
ReplyDeleteKeep pluggin' away at NaNo...
AT least you're still making progress and that is something to be proud of!
ReplyDeleteEver since I dropped my computer I've hooked up an external drive to do the Time Machine automatic backups. Because with me, it's only a matter of time before I do something stupid like drop my computer again!
ReplyDeleteI'm at 13,578, but only because I'm working on something I'd already started. I have been making progress, but not as much as I had planned on.
Any word count is nothing to sneeze at I say. I'm at 8,000 so I'm really behind too! I'm hoping to do a 1000 words a day this month. Wish us both luck!
ReplyDeleteOh no! I back up to an external drive each time I write. Then, with each draft completed, I copy my files to an online site. I have a degree in math/computer sci, so I know exactly how unstable software can be. Kind of ccrazy, actually. :)
ReplyDeleteOn a different note, I'm really happy with my NaNo progress. I just passed 25K. Halfway there! I have all day to work tomorrow, so I am hoping to get lots done. Then, when this draft is done, I will have more revisions to do for my agent. Busy busy!!
I'm lucky to eek out two writing days a week...life happens!!! But if you can get in a 2000 word per BIC moment, you're doing great! Keep it up!!!
ReplyDeleteI started out strong and then hit a snag, so I haven't written for three days. But today is the day, I'm determined to kick it back into high gear. Good job on keeing it up and good luck!
