FEMALE WRITERS WRITING IN A MALE POV
Are you a female writer trying to write a story with a male MC but having a hard time grasping that “male voice?”
Currently, there are few YA books with male MCs written by male authors. The majority of YA “boy books” are written by women, and sometimes the voice just doesn’t sound male.
There’s one quick way to learn the guy voice--read guy magazines such as these listed below:
ESQUIRE
MEN’S JOURNAL
GQ
MEN’S HEALTH
It’s easy to read an article or two before your BIC time.

Great tip. I worry that I could get the male POV right. If I ever try, I'll use your tip for sure.
ReplyDeleteGreat tip. I write adult, not YA, but this is still something I worry about a lot. Thanks for sharing it! :D
ReplyDeleteBriliant! I hadn't thought about that. Magazines, women's anyway, do have a distinctive (slightly obsequious) voice.
ReplyDeleteSounds simple enough!
ReplyDeleteOr - have a guy critique your MS! He doesn't even have to be a writer if it's just a beta read.
ReplyDeleteThat's a cute and fun idea. I like Matt's idea, too!
ReplyDeleteI never thought of that! Although my YA ideas are usually female POV, my MG tend to come from a male voice. I think it's because my son is 11 and a huge reader!

I have three boys at home, maybe I should consider writing a young adult with male POV. I'm guessing my son things I'm ignorant to current slang be cause he always says,
ReplyDelete"Mom, that's sick. Oh, that means it's good."
Dah! I got that the first hundred times.
That's so true! Great tip!
